Veatch Program

The national philanthropic program of UUCSR

About Veatch

The Veatch Program works toward fulfilling UUCSR’s congregational mission to build a more just and joyful world. We provide funding for social change organizations led by people who are directly impacted by injustice, as well as core denominational institutions. Veatch has been a leader in progressive philanthropy since 1959.

Veatch grantees create their own solutions, fight for more equitable social policies and hold industries accountable. They make a better world for everyone through organizing and building power for a strong democracy.

Our professional staff members are known for their partnership and leadership in philanthropy, engaging in strategic initiatives that serve Veatch grantees and our mission.

A Board of Governors, members elected by the congregation, oversees the work of the Veatch Program.

Funding Model

The Veatch Program supports the fabric of democracy and social justice in our country. The core of our model is to provide long term general operating funds to social change organizations and for aligned strategies at the local, regional and national levels. This requires a guiding analysis of how systems of oppression based on race, gender and economic opportunity cause and sustain inequality.

Veatch grantees are building a base of leaders and communities dedicated to inclusion, opportunity and hope. Our strategic grantmaking supports them to find strength in numbers and make systemic change. The over 180 multi-racial organizations and movements we fund are on the frontlines of our nation’s most pressing issues, in urban, suburban and rural America. Our regranting and collaborative grantmaking initiatives with our colleagues in philanthropy extend our reach and impact.

Program Areas:

Veatch provides funding through six main program areas:

Unitarian Universalism: Strengthening and growing our denomination.

Civil Rights and Sustainable Communities: Supporting the most marginalized people in our society to change unjust systems.

Economic Equity and Fairness: Expanding economic equity, democracy and worker rights.

Making Democracy Work: Ensuring equal representation through electoral participation and education, community organizing and year-round voter engagement.

New York: Addressing the needs of our home state, specifically on Long Island.

Social Justice Infrastructure: Sustaining organizational and movement capacity, informed public discourse and progressive philanthropy.

For a list of current grantees, including our participation in a range of collaborative efforts, see our Annual Report.

The Unitarian Universalist Veatch Program at Shelter Rock provides support for efforts within the religious and spiritual mission of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Shelter Rock where their purposes are best served by outside agencies acting under the Veatch Program and the Congregation.
