UUCSR has engaged Larry Weaner Landscape Associates to design wildflower meadows along the perimeter of the Great Lawn.  This design work will be performed in coordination with the Green Sanctuary and Buildings and Grounds Committees.

The Land Management Plan for the property included this idea of creating native meadow landscapes as valuable wildlife habitats in what is now turf grass.  The concept is to retain the central lawn area stretching from the patio down the hill while framing that greensward with wildflower meadows.

Larry Weaner is a nationally recognized expert in the design, installation and management of wildflower meadows.  He has over 40 years of experience and has authored an important book on the subject, entitled Garden Revolution: How Our Landscapes Can be a Source of Environmental Change (Timber Press, 2016).

Funds needed for these design services were included in the CAPEX capital budget for the current fiscal year.  If the design developed under this project is approved, construction could be funded in next year’s capital budget.

Larry Weaner has provided the following images of managed wildflower meadows.
