Becoming A Member
Membership in the Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Shelter Rock is accomplished through the simple act of signing the congregational Membership Book. While a simple and brief gesture, it is hoped that the decision is a significant one, and follows considerable thought and soul-searching.
Membership involves embracing broad principles like affirming the worth and dignity of every human being, truth seeking, freedom of thought and expression, and safeguarding the inter-dependent web of which we are a part.
But guided by these principles, each individual's spiritual and religious quest is honored. There is no creed or test of faith on which membership in the congregation depends. We appreciate religious diversity - and so long as bigotry is rejected - seek insight wherever it is to be found, in sources religious and secular. We think of membership as "becoming," as much as "arrival."
As to rights and expectations of membership, people who join the congregation can vote at all congregational meetings, chair committees, and assume leadership roles in congregational life. It is expected that each member will support the congregation with a financial pledge, within his or her means. (Nobody who is in serious financial straits will be asked to make a financial pledge.)
We hope that membership in this congregation will be highly fulfilling and rewarding! Welcome!
