The UUA Common Read

For the third year, the UUA has suggested that Unitarian Universalists across the country read a book in common and hold discussions. The selection this year is The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness by Michelle Alexander. Alexander, an attorney who is a civil rights advocate and litigator, asserts that crime-fighting policies and systems in the U.S., such as the “war on drugs” and the incarceration system, disproportionately and intentionally affect Americans of color. She describes multifaceted, lifelong discrimination and disenfranchisement that affect people who are branded “felon.” This book complements the congregation’s desire to address prison reform through the Large Grants Program. Reading it will give each of us deeper insight into the need for reform. Through support from the Adult Programs Committee, the book will be available at the reduced price of $5.00, and will be available in the lobby each Sunday in March and during the week from Sharyn Esposito in the office. When you purchase your book, you will be able to sign up for a discussion group. To learn more about the book and access a video of Ms. Alexander’s workshop at GA 2012 go to http://www.uua.org/re/multigenerational/read/.
